FAQ

A quantitative progesterone blood test is the single most accurate method for timing breedings. The test is reported as a numeric result, usually ng/dl. Combined with observing the behavor of the dog and bitch, vaginal cytology, ovulation can be pinpointed with great accuracy in most bitches.

An exact progesterone level is also needed when the dog or bitch will be traveling a long distance for breeding, when fresh chilled or fresh semen is to be used, or when breeding dogs or bitches that have a history of being difficult to breed. In addition, an exact progesterone level for timing ovulation is necessary when a C-section is anticipated or when the bitch is near term and fetal survivablility needs to be assessed.

TCI is a technique that can be used with any form of canine semen (fresh, chilled or frozen). A rigid endoscope is passed through the reproductive tract to the cervix, so the cervix can then be catheterised, allowing semen deposition deep in the uterus. Therefore, the semen is inseminated as close to the eggs as possible.

Most bitches stand for the procedure without any need for sedation and it is a stress free process, with the whole insemination lasting very little time. TCI should always be performed with frozen semen to maximise the chances of successfully obtaining pregnancy.

TCI is advantageous (over vaginal inseminations) for chilled or poor-quality fresh semen due to where the semen is deposited. TCI also has the added benefit of allowing direct visualisation of the reproductive tract. Visualisation of the reproductive tissues can assist with identifying where the bitch is in her heat cycle and allows screening for any abnormalities at the same time. TCI carries the same safety as a traditional AI allowing the female to be in a calm safe environment when inseminated.

Artificial insemination (AI) is a technique used to help dogs become pregnant without a natural mating. Semen is collected from a stud dog and, depending on the technique used, is either inserted into a bitch’s vagina or her uterus.

Whelping means “to give birth to” (typically referring to canine births). Breeding and whelping puppies is a lot of work. Researching and arranging for the health testing and stud matches can be overwhelming for families who would like to have a pup from their beloved family member. We love to see our dogs’ grandpups grow up if they are bred ethically and healthily. Therefore, we offer families of our pups the opportunity to breed their dogs with our expertise and assistance.
